The Jury

Jury members for the 17th National Championships

Chair; Ian Bateman FRPS, MPAGB

Ian has been making AV sequences for many years after buying a pair of GAF Electrofade projectors in the early 1980’s. He was an early convert to digital, and has been instrumental in pioneering digital techniques in AV, and was the first person to be awarded both an FRPS and MPAGB in digital AV. He is on the AV Assessment Panel of the PAGB, and is currently a member of the RPS Time Based Media Working Group, defining the criteria for the new Multimedia and Narrative distinction. He is also the Chairman of the RPS International AV Festival, the sister event to the National AV Festival. Ian’s sequences cover a wide range of topics and styles, and earlier this year he won the Gold Medal at the Adelaide International AV Festival. He has judged AV competitions at every level, and has given lectures throughout the UK as well as in Ireland, the Netherlands and Australia. When judging competition entries Ian looks for a high degree of creative flair coupled with technical excellence in both the photography and the construction of the sequences.

Howard Bagshaw ARPS DPAGB

Howard has been a keen photographer all his life, but it’s only since he retired, 5 years ago, that he started to make AVs seriously. He says that he still feels a novice in this arena, though he has now made perhaps 20 AVs. He has been a member of the Wilmslow AV group for 3 years and is also currently chair of the Staffordshire AV group. He finds the opportunity to share and get comments on his work at these meetings to be invaluable. He has entered a few club, regional, national and international competitions and done well with some sequences, most recently with ‘Migrant Mother’ and ‘Tough Guy Challenge’. He was delighted to be awarded his ARPS in AV in 2009 and DPAGB in 2010. With his wife Carole, he also enjoys watching AVs, marvelling at some, but despairing of others. He believes that there are many valid uses of the medium and has no hang-up about animations as long as they add to the presentation. For Howard it is the story or message which the AV portrays which is most important, as long as the quality of the images and audio is up to scratch. He feels that he has learned so much in four years, but still has so much to learn.
